Abstract

The patient, a 22-year old male, was admitted on 5 October 2009 after a suicide attempt by ingestion of caustic fluid (JIK® bleach). The patient was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, stage 2, with a CD4 count of 275, and no other relevant medical history. On admission, he was underweight with a body mass index (BMI) of 14.8 kg/m².
